Round 6 (Compensatory): Cassanova McKinzy, LB, Auburn

If Over the Cap’s projections are correct, the 49ers will have three out of four picks at the end of the sixth round with only one selection by the Cowboys getting in the way. This compensatory pick would be for the loss of Frank Gore.

Cassanova McKinzy isn’t just one of the best names in the draft; he’s a potential inside linebacking prospect with range to make sideline-to-sideline tackles. He’s played all positions in the linebacking corps and is versatile enough to play anywhere, though inside linebacker is likely his best spot in a 3-4 defense.

He doesn’t really have any coverage experience, but he did record 20 quarterback hurries last season. He needs to work on his pursuit, as he’s vulnerable to cutbacks and changes of direction, but when he does get to people, he hits them hard. He’s a project worth investing some time in.

Other players considered:

  • Josh Tupou, DT, Colorado
  • J. Dillon, S, West Virginia
  • DeMarcus Washington, WR, Florida
