Round 6 (from Dallas): David Grinnage, TE, North Carolina State

The 49ers lost their own sixth-round pick in the mid-season trade for Gerald Hodges, but picked up the Cowboys’ selection when they traded out of the seventh round last season, so it all balances out.

David Grinnage is huge, at 6’5” and 265 pounds—he looks more like a defensive end than a tight end, to be honest. However, his hands are what make it clear he’s an offensive player. He hasn’t put up big numbers—he caught just 25 passes for 290 yards last season—but he made some very good looking catches, and part of his lack of production can be chalked up to NC State’s offense as a whole.

He showed up in the biggest games, catching seven passes for 82 yards and a touchdown against then top-ranked Clemson. His size, propensity for playing well in important moments and the potential to improve his receiving ability makes him a very interesting late-round prospect.

Other players considered:

  • Keyarris Garrett, WR, Tulsa
  • J. Porsise, RB, Notre Dame
  • Byron Marshall, WR, Oregon
