San Francisco 49ers: A Budget-Conscious Guide to Free Agency
Wide Receiver: Rueben Randle, New York Giants
Rueben Randle had a down year in 2015, with just 57 receptions for 797 yards. It looked, after 2014, like he was preparing for a breakout year, as he was just short of a 1,000 yard season, but he just didn’t seem to have everything click for him last year.
The Giants seem unlikely to bring him back, when Odell Beckham, Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks are all on the roster. That means someone else will get a chance to gamble on his obvious talent and try to mitigate his all-too-common mental errors and inconsistency. He’ll have a 100-yard day and look like he put everything together, and then follow it up with a 30-yard day where he can’t catch anything.
He seemed to be getting more consistent as last year came to an end, topping 50 yards in three of his last four games. He’s a steady secondary receiver with some upside to potentially be more than that, as he’ll only be 25 years old next season. He’d be a decent pick from the bargain bin, assuming the 49ers don’t count on him to run the receiving corps.
