5 Players the San Francisco 49ers May Cut in 2016
By Peter Panacy
Wide Receiver Quinton Patton
2015 should have been the year in which three-year pro wideout Quinton Patton proved himself worthy to the 49ers’ offensive plans.
And he had signs of being able to do this. Without question, last year was Patton’s best in San Francisco. But he still only registered 30 catches for 394 yards and one touchdown despite finally being healthy for all 16 regular-season games.
Patton is one of those players whose moments of brilliance are accompanied by question marks. For every solid play Patton makes, it seems as if he does something completely idiotic.
Like this:
Patton will only account for $772,875 against the salary cap if retained next season, and the team’s cap savings (if cut) wouldn’t be that much.
Still, the 49ers may want to open the door for other receivers in 2016 such as second-year pro DeAndre Smelter or a rookie wideout should San Francisco go that route in the upcoming draft.
And if the team re-signs 35-year-old veteran Anquan Boldin, there may not be enough roster space to keep someone like Patton around.
