San Francisco 49ers: Quarterback Options for Head Coach Chip Kelly in 2016
By Peter Panacy
Quarterback Dylan Thompson
The least likely, almost laughable, scenario for the 49ers would be the promotion of one-year pro veteran quarterback Dylan Thompson.
Thompson found his way onto San Francisco’s practice squad after some up-and-down moments during the 49ers preseason in 2015. Thompson’s best game came during Week 4 of the exhibition set against the San Diego Chargers — a game in which he went 17-of-25 for 225 yards and two touchdowns against one interception.
With one year under his belt, albeit on the practice squad, Thompson will be back on San Francisco’s 90-man roster in advance of training camp. He will, at least, provide some competition here.
But the only way Thompson works his way onto the eventual 53-man roster is if the 49ers either part ways with Kaepernick and/or don’t pick up a quarterback via the draft.
As has been the case in recent years, it’s doubtful the Niners keep three quarterbacks on their active roster during the regular season.
So Thompson isn’t exactly an option for head coach Chip Kelly and the 49ers offense.
Stranger things have happened though.
