Mike Shanahan

Another name who could be resurrected from his 49ers past is Mike Shanahan. Like Mike Holmgren, Shanahan expressed interest in the vacancy two years in a row and was even interviewed for the position in 2015.

And he continued to show intrigue for the spot, per Mike Silver of Sports Illustrated.

Shanahan was the 49ers offensive coordinator between 1992 and 1994 and ended up winning a Super Bowl with San Francisco during his last season with the franchise.

But Shanahan appears to be locked in on the Miami Dolphins’ vacant spot, per Bleacher Report.

Why He Fits:

Shanahan is part of 49er royalty having served as a coordinator for San Francisco’s last Super Bowl crown. His offensive mind set is something an inept 49ers offense needs in 2016, and it’s impossible to overlook his vast experience.

Why He Doesn’t:

Like Holmgren, Shanahan is getting up there in age (63 years old). And he’s most recently remembered for the numerous debacles that took place with the Washington Redskins not so long ago.

Do the 49ers want a retread?

The Likelihood:

This won’t happen especially if Shanahan is already zeroing in on the head-coaching job in Miami.
