Linebacker Gerald Hodges is expected to get the start in Wilhoite’s stead alongside linebacker NaVorro Bowman. And running back Shaun Draughn will handle the majority of carries on the ground versus his former squad.
Outside linebacker Aaron Lynch, who suffered a concussion last week, will have to go through the NFL’s protocol on head injuries prior to returning. And tight end Vance McDonald, who has emerged as one of quarterback Blaine Gabbert’s favorite targets, will also have to do the same.
Lynch is the 49ers’ best pass-rusher with 6.5 sacks. If he’s unable to go, the 49ers will look to drum up some additional pressure against quarterback Johnny Manziel.
The 49ers are thin at tight end with Garrett Celek (ankle) on injured reserve, which means rookie Blake Bell is the only healthy option at the position.
San Francisco could, feasibly, line up long-snapper Kyle Nelson at the position or employ more formations with fullback Bruce Miller at the end of the line.
