It looked like the 49ers have tried to get Colin Kaepernick or at least thought about it vs. the Lions. He was seen right in the huddle with his helmet on ready to go in but never did. At Philadelphia he came into the game on a 3rd and long and handed off that is the extent of his meaningful playing time. Head coach Jim Harbaugh has said he would like to get a package that takes advantage of Kaepernicks athletic talents but through 6 games has yet to do so. Colin did see mop up duty vs. the Bucs and led the team to a TD on 3-3 passing but that was against a beaten team.

During the Lions game the announcers mentioned a couple times they thought Kaepernick was going to go into the game but didn’t. I wonder if it would be at Quarterback with Alex Smith on the bench or maybe at an H-back, Wide receiver type of spot to confuse the defense or get him the ball in some trick play Harbaugh dreamed up. The opinion I ultimately formed is that I wouldn’t like to see Kaepernick on the field unless he’s in on mop up duty. Using him as a wildcat QB or some Kordell Stewart like WR/RB might be cool and may work on a play or 2 but it could also get Alex looking over his shoulders. Alex Smith is rolling right now, that is a fact, the 49ers are legit contenders in the NFC and Harbaugh shouldn’t mess with that. Keep Kaepernick on the sidelines where he can’t get hurt and he can learn most importantly.
