The San Francisco 49ers today announced that they have locked up CB Tramaine Brock, to a one-year contract. The contract is the one-year, $1.323 million tender. The cornerback position will undoubtedly be the most watched in training camp, as the 49ers have six cornerbacks under contract including, CB Carlos Rogers, CB Tarell Brown, CB Chris Culliver, CB Nnamdi Asomugha, CB Perrish Cox, and now CB Tramaine Brock. We all know 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh loves to breed competition, and the cornerback position has plenty of it.

With Brock signing his one-year tender, it will make him an unrestricted free-agent in 2014. I do not believe Brock will be back next year, but signing him to a one-year tender all but ensures his spot on the team in 2013. The odd man out could be Cox, as he has been limited to mainly special teams since being signed as a free-agent last year. Whatever the case maybe, you can be sure the cornerback position will be full of competition, heated battles, and smack talk.

I personally, do not agree with the move, as I believe Brock is highly over-rated. He has mental lapses in coverage and is nothing more but a short-term plug. With the signing of Brock, it raises the question of whether the 49ers will target a cornerback with one of their top picks in this year’s draft.

Stay tuned as we will keep you updated, as more off-season transactions become available to us.

The San Francisco 49ers today announced that they tendered a one-year contract to CB Tramaine Brock. The 49ers signed Brock as an undrafted free-agent back in 2010 where he earned a spot on the team under then coach Mike Singletary. Although Brock adds little to no value in nickel and dime situations, he more than makes up for it on special teams, by tying the team lead with 15 special teams tackles in 2012. The signing is a surprise to me, as I feel they could have found a cheaper alternative in the draft while saving some cap space.

Brock was consistently beat down the field, and it seemed like every time he was in a position to make a play, he chocked. Just go back to last year’s pre-season games, Brock was beat time and time again and still earned a roster spot. The 49ers coaching staff must love what they see, for them to re-sign him to a one-year tender offer. I just don’t see it.

In other 49ers news, they also signed wide receiver Joe Hastings to a one-year deal. Hastings was on the 49ers active roster back in 2011 after WR Braylon Edwards went down to injury but then was later released. He last played in the UFL (United Football League) for the Sacramento Mountain Lions in 2012 before coming back to San Francisco.

I hate to say it, but I think it is time to cut ties with San Francisco 49ers CB’s Carlos Rogers and Tramaine Brock. Both players have been liabilities in pass protection, and are clearly the weakest link. Although, second year reserve CB Chris Culliver has struggled this year, his inexpensive rookie contract makes him a valuable asset. The same can not be said of either Rogers or Brock.

Rogers, who enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2011, had more than his fair share of mishaps in 2012, and is clearly not the same player after signing that lucrative 4 year/$31.3 million contract. Rogers’ inability to high point the ball and stick with receivers 10-15 yards downfield, has been disappointing to say the least. Rogers is scheduled to make $5.5 million next season, including a $1.475 million signing bonus. Should GM Trent Baalke release Rogers, the 49ers would relieve themselves of the burden of over-paying for a high-priced cornerback, in the last stages of his career.

Sep 23, 2012; Minneapolis, MN, USA; San Francisco 49ers defensive back Carlos Rogers (22) argues a call with referee Brian Burkhart (15) during the third quarter against the Minnesota Vikings at the Metrodome. The Vikings defeated the 49ers 24-13. Mandatory Credit: Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

Rogers contract is back-loaded, meaning the majority of his money is due toward the end of the contract. By releasing him now, the Niners would avoid a cap hit of $7.3 million. Furthermore, it would break the obligation of having to honor the base salary over the course of the next three years, which amasses to $19 million, a huge consolation prize considering they only need to pay Rogers his signing bonus of $4.43 million. So you can see why this makes sense financially.

September 18, 2011; San Francisco, CA, USA; Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Miles Austin (19) breaks a tackle from San Francisco 49ers defensive back Tramaine Brock (26) to score a touchdown during the second quarter at Candlestick Park. Mandatory Credit: Jason O. Watson-USA TODAY Sports

In addition, the next casualty should be Tramaine Brock. Brock has developed nicely into a solid special teams player but nothing more. His liability exposure on passing downs prompted DC Vic Fangio to demote Brock in favor of FS Darcel McBath. Brock’s contract expired at the end of this season, and keeping him on the roster would be a surprise.

With the 49ers being able to clear up some cap space, while bringing in new talent through the draft, will make 2013 a year to remember. Although I like Rogers, he has clearly been underperforming, and unless he takes a significant pay-cut, it is better to cut ties now.
