The 49ers suffered another injury at the Wide Receiver position on Sunday when Joshua Morgan went down with a broken leg that could keep him out the remainder of the season.

General Manager Trent Baalke and Head Coach Jim Harbaugh indicated the team would bring in another WR before the team travels to Detroit for it’s week 6 showdown in Motown.

Baalke was even asked today whether he would consider bringing back Terrell Owens or possibly even Randy Moss and said nothing was out of the question.

Well it seems the 49ers work fast! In a tweet by his agent J.R.Rickert it was announced that 34 year old WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh would try out for the team today. Houshmandzadeh last played for coach Harbaugh’s brother Jon in Baltimore with the Ravens last season, and had 30 catches for 398 yards and three touchdowns.
*UPDATE*
Add Chris Chambers to the list of veteran’s being considered for the 49ers open WR position. Chambers who played for the Chiefs last season fits the bill of what the 49ers want in Morgan’s replacement. A big, strong receiver with blocking ability to assist in the run game. It will be interesting over the next 24-48 hours to see if the team brings in any other vets for try outs or signs one of the 2 they brought in today to a contract. Either way expect a move to be made sooner rather than later.

The Seahawks signed the best wide receiver in free agency this year, T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Housh signed a five-year, $40 million deal. Your 49ers were not in discussions at all to sign the former Bengal. In a recent post I said the 49ers should sign Housh just to keep him from going to a division rival. We need a number one receiver which will not be newly signed WR Brandon Jones. With Housh off the market the 49ers still have options in free agency along with the draft. But don’t expect the Niners to sign another WR better than Jones. They seem content. Hopefully with the 10th pick they will draft a WR but I suspect Mike Singletary and company will draft either an offensive tackle or defensive end. Both positions are needed, but a WR is a more urgent position the Niners need to upgrade.

Warner Visits 49ers

Just as I thought, Kurt Warner’s visit to the 49ers yesterday was a leveraging tactic even though his agent said it was a serious visit. Warner did receive a contract offer from the Niners however today his agent submitted a contract proposal to keep Warner in Arizona. Basically Warner’s visit means he can get more money out of the Cardinals. Good, didn’t need or want him anyway.

The 49ers struck a deal with former Titan’s wide receiver Brandon Jones worth $16.5 million over five years. Jones had 41 receptions, 449 receiving yards and one touchdown last season. He played mostly on third down last year and was third on the Titan’s depth chart. The 49ers went out and signed a receiver which I was hoping but this was not what I was thinking. Nonetheless no one expects Jones to be the number one receiver next year but with Bryant Johnson signing with the Loins and Isaac Bruce being a 50-50 chance of resigning, Jones might be the de facto number one receiver anyways. There are still plenty of quality receivers in T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Marvin Harrison and Laveranues Coles who can fill the number one receiving spot. However none so far are expected to visit the Niners. Note the Seahawks have a lot of interest in Housh which would mean facing him twice a year. That alone would make me want to sign him to keep him from going to a divisional rival minus the need of a number one receiver.

Kurt Warner to Visit Niners

Kurt Warner is expected to visit the Niners this week. I didn’t understand why when I first heard about it but then I read it is more of leverage in negotiations with the Cardinals. Good, the only way signing Warner would make sense is if the 49ers front office is set on drafting a QB like Marc Sanchez with the 10th pick. Warner would start as Sanchez learned the ropes. I don’t like that scenario either (draft a WR!) but it is the only way signing Warner would make sense. The 49ers are nowhere near being a Super Bowl contender as Warner has said he would like to sign with so the leverage tactic makes sense.

The biggest news in QB’s so far this off-season has been the rumors of the Broncos trying to trade Jay Cutler. If this was true I hope the 49ers were in the mix or are at least now lobbying for Cutler knowing the Broncos are trying to ship him. It is not too often you find a QB like Cutler who is young being traded.

Niners Resign Veterans

The Red and Gold resigned linebacker Takeo Spikes and kick returner Allen Rossum. Both contributed to the 49ers finishing the season 5-4 and bringing them back was a great move. The 49ers finally have a pure fullback on the roster as they brought back former FB Moran Norris. The fullback position basically didn’t exist in Mike Martz’s offense but will get a heavy load in Jimmy Raye’s run run run offense. Frank Gore is happy.
