If you have not heard the news yet, former NFL anchor Pat Summerall passed away this afternoon. He is best known for being John Madden’s broadcasting partner for 22 years. Aside from being a broadcaster, Summerall played 10 seasons in the NFL for three teams including the Detroit Lions, Phoenix Cardinals, and New York Giants. In addition, he is the only broadcaster in NFL history to call 16 Super Bowls.

Below is former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young’s exclusive interview courtesy of ESPN:

On what he remembers most about Pat Summerall:

Pat was the authority in the room…When Pat spoke you listen.

On the legacy he left behind:

He was the voice of football…Pat was football.

On Summerall off Camera:

He was friendly, but when John would run the meetings, he had a lot to say, he would wave his hands, and ask you all the tough questions and everything. But when Pat asked you a question, or Pat spoke, everybody kind of turned and was like “whoa.” How many great play by play guys have been great players as well? I can’t think of someone who has made that transition.

I will always remember Pat Summerall as the voice of football as well. The unique tone of his voice, will always be remembered and never duplicated. When Summerall called a football game, you knew it was a big game. Summerall passed away at the age of 82 (1930-2013).

RIP Pat, you will never be forgotten.

The San Francisco 49ers attempt to bring Super Bowl 50 to the team’s new stadium in Santa Clara got a boost on Thursday with the additions of Steve Young and George Seifert to the bid committee. San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee made the announcement on Thursday in a press conference at City Hall.

Young and Seifert will travel to Boston on May 21 with the rest of the 49ers Super Bowl bid committee to make a presentation in front of NFL owners. Both former 49ers legends have experience in the Super Bowl and together they won Super Bowl XXXII in 1995, with Young as the starting QB and Seifert the head coach. In that game, Young threw a Super Bowl-record six touchdown passes.

If the 49ers win the bid to host the Super Bowl in 2016 the game will played at their new stadium in Santa Clara, however, all of the festivities leading up to the game will take place in San Francisco. The other finalist to host Super Bowl L is Sun Life Stadium where the Miami Dolphins play home games.

Should the city of San Francisco win the bid to host Super Bowl L, it will be the second time in NFL history the Bay Area hosted the championship game. Super Bowl XIX in 1985 was played at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto, California.

During the early 90′s the San Francisco 49ers were the team to beat. Sure, they had their tough battles with the Dallas Cowboys, but eventually reigned supreme during the 1994-1995 NFC Championship game, as the 49ers won 38-28. No player, had a bigger impact in that game, than former 49ers quarterback Steve Young. A player known for both his scrambling ability and accurate arm, Young was the epitome of a mobile quarterback.

However, he never had the luxury to play in a pistol formation like 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. In fact, Young never took a single snap from the shotgun formation, according to Matt Maiocco. Not one.

Young, a former 49ers quarterback now turned ESPN NFL analyst, had this to say regarding the pistol:

I’m actually really jealous about the pistol. I think it’s such a cool thing…The pistol isn’t going to go away, but the job in the long run is going to be to deliver the ball from the pocket. This is a wonderful bridge for young players.

Look what’s happened to these mobile guys, my heroes, my guys. There’s this bridge now that they can have success, get more confidence, go to the Super Bowl.

It is great to hear this coming from a 49er great like Steve Young. To hear him say those words, in regards to the pistol, holds more weight, than any other NFL analyst, in my opinion. Job well done, Steve job well done.
