Waking up Saturday morning to the news of a Kansas City Chiefs player committing a murder-suicide was shocking, to say the least.  As the news broke, no information was released of which player it was that committed this awful act, but it did not matter.  Any story of anyone doing this, let alone an NFL player, brought immediate sadness for me.

I have never been a Chiefs fan and never heard of the name Jovan Belcher before Saturday.  As more information came out and started filling in the blanks of what happened before and after the incident, it made it harder, not easier, to understand why this promising young linebacker committed the acts he did.  And we may never fully know why.

Since Saturday, I have read various news reports about what happened and the story of Belcher’s life.  If there is one story all NFL fans should read it’s the Monday Morning Quarterback column by SI.com writer Peter King.  It’s hard not to get choked up reading his story about Belcher’s life and how much promise he had, even as an undrafted player from Maine.  The story about how Belcher made it into the NFL as an undrafted free agent was told by his agent Joe Linta.

When tragedies like this happen, it not only affects the Chiefs organization and their fans, but all teams and fans everywhere of all sports.  It just goes to show you how tight knit of a community the NFL world is and how fragile life can be.
