The San Francisco 49ers released an “It Gets Better” video becoming the first team in the NFL to do so. The “It Gets Better” video series is aimed at LGBT teens who are bullied because of their sexual orientation.

The video series was created by columnists Dan Savage and has featured other athletes, actors, politicians in addition to other famous people. The 49ers organization made the video after Niners fan Sean Chapin started a petition on Change.org which generated over 16,000 votes. The video features Isaac Sopoaga, Ricky Jean Francois, Ahmad Brooks and Donte Whitner. In video Whitner says,

The San Francisco 49ers are proud to join ItGetsBetter.org, to let all LGBT teens know that it gets better. On behalf of the entire 49ers organization, we are on your side, and we promise it gets better.

Niner Noise applauds the San Francisco 49ers organization for making the video after being encouraged on Change.org. Even though attitudes are changing sports players, especially in football, can be resistant to accepting homosexuals on the team. While there are no football players in the NFL who are publicly gay it would be inaccurate to say there are no NFL players who are gay. The San Francisco 49ers join the San Francisco Giants in being the first team in their respective leagues to create a “It Gets Better.” Let’s hope this inspires other fans and NFL teams to follow suit.
