An injury to starting right cornerback Walt Harris that was called “nothing major” by the 49ers is now something major. Harris tore his ACL in his right knee while covering wide receiver Dominic Zeigler in practice on Tuesday. Harris may not be out for the season as he could be fully recovered at some point in the 2009 season but given Harris’ age, 34, and the seriousness of the injury he is most likely done for the season. The 49ers are now in trouble at right corner as the secondary is coming off a bad season. Third year corner Tarell Brown will most likely take over as the starter. Brown only started one game last season but saw action in 15 games and had two interceptions. There is also backup Shawntae Spencer but he is coming off an ACL injury of his own.

The 49ers and GM Scott McCloughan find themselves in a bad position. Just when I thought McCloughan was starting to do well as a GM this injury highlights his mistake in not addressing the cornerback issue when one of your starters is 34 years old. The 49ers do have other options with players on the roster but they are Allen Rossum, who is 33 and has been focusing on punt and kick-off returns, Marcus Hudson, who has zero career starts, and unproven rookies Carlos Thomas, Jahi Word-Daniels and Terrail Lambert. The next move for McCloughan is to look at the free agent corners that are still available. Those include: Chris McAlister, Roderick Hood, Pacman Jones, Dre Bly, Sam Madison and Mike McKenzie. I say bring in someone who is young in age but ripe in staring experience (Roderick Hood) and bring in someone with lots of starting experience (Chris McAlister). I hope McCloughan does not think he can go a whole season with the current lineup at corner because the backups are not up to the task of being reliable starters for a whole season.

A couple of players got banged up at the 49ers voluntary OTA practice going on from Monday through Thursday. Most notably was corner back Walt Harris who suffered a sprained right knee. It was reported that Harris was on the field for several minutes as he was examined by trainers. He did not practice the rest of the day. The Niners are short in the CB department with Tarell Brown and Shawntae Spencer as the backups. Spencer missed 14 games last year because of surgery on his knee. GM Scott McCloughan did not sign or draft a CB to beef up the backups. Harris is 34 years old so depending on how serious the injury turns out it will indicate if the Niners are in trouble at the position. Brown and Spencer are adequate backups but even with Harris and star CB Nate Clements last year the secondary was lit-up. Not all blame falls to the CB corps because the D-line and linebackers share equal responsibility failing to pressure the QB. (A defensive pass rusher was also overlooked by McCloughan in free agency and the draft.) Let’s cross our fingers and hope Harris’ injury is not serious.

Also injured was wide receiver Dominique Zeigler who got leveled by free safety Dashon Goldson. This happened only a few minutes after the Harris got hurt who was covering Zeigler when he injured his knee. I wonder if Zeigler believes in karma? Zeigler injury was described as “banged up” and the injury is not serious. On Monday defensive end Kentwan Balmer hurt his right knee and WR Josh Morgan hurt his ankle. Both sat out Tuesday’s practice. In only two days the 49ers have managed to get four players hurt in non-contact drills. Mike Singletary said he was not happy with the effort at Monday’s practice so maybe the players thought they had to turn it up a few notches which lead to the injuries.

49ers Sign Two Draft Picks

Third round draft pick Scott McKillop and seventh round draft pick Ricky Jean-Francois finalized their contracts and are officially part of the Red and Gold family.
