San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, known for making friendly wagers, has placed yet another one on the table. This year, the mayor is 2-0, as he won his initial wagers, against both the cities of Green Bay and Atlanta.

Mayor Lee bet Green Bay’s Mayor James Schmitt, that if the 49ers won, Green Bay would sponsor special preview tours, of the Exploratorium Science Museum, to hundreds of San Francisco children. In addition, the Mayor would also receive Wisconsin’s cheese curds, chocolates, and wine from Captain’s Walk Winery in downtown Green Bay. Well, we all know the end result, as the San Francisco 49ers trounced the Green Bay Packers 45-31.

Deborah Svoboda/KQED

As if that wasn’t enough, Mayor Lee decided to double up his winnings, by placing yet another ante for the NFC Championship game, against Atlanta’s Mayor Kasim Reed. If the 49ers won, Reed would order Atlanta City Hall to be lit up in red and gold, for a night, in addition to shipping a case of Georgia peaches to San Francisco. On the other hand, if the 49ers lost, San Francisco’s City Hall would be lit in red and white, with 25 pounds of Philz Coffee being shipped back east. Mr. Lee, once again prevailed, and now has the burden of looking up recipes for all those peaches he accumulated, saying:

I’m looking for recipes and dessert chefs to help me do peach cobblers and peach pie because I’ve got 25 pounds of peaches that come from Georgia.

However, the stakes are higher this time around, as Mr. Lee accepted a bet with Baltimore’s Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. The bet consists of the losing Mayor taking part in a day of service with local programs from AmeriCorps, a federal community service agency. In addition to community service, the two politicians have agreed to put hometown seafood on the table.

The losing Mayor will have to visit a local crab market while sporting the other team’s jersey, and crack open the local crustacean, either a Dungeness crab in San Francisco or a blue crab in Baltimore.

With the Super Bowl one day away, look for San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, to finish the season going a perfect 3-0.

In anticipation of the 49ers winning their sixth championship ring, San Francisco mayor Ed Lee has suggested limiting the sale of hard alcohol during the Super Bowl on February 3.

This is likely a response to the vandalism and violence that followed the San Francisco Giants World Series win in October. Lee and Police Chief Greg Suhr will be touring neighborhoods affected by the mayhem and will suggest to businesses they serve something other than hard alcohol during the game.

Well, at least Lee is doing something in the name of the 49ers other than letting the team walk out of San Francisco and move down to Santa Clara without much of a fight. But certainly this is an overreach and unnecessary. Even if you banned all alcohol sales during the game you will unfortunately still have people get their hands on booze and cause mischief. Restricting any sales means people will just stock before the game and/or purchase something other than hard liquor. The better and more logical way forward is to enforce laws on the books, like drunk and disorderly conduct in public, before situations escalate to violence.

What you do think Niners fans, would limiting hard alcohol sales during the game prevent the chaos we saw after the Giants World Series win? Share your thoughts in the comments.
