49ers Break Camp

With a 3-0 preseason record and with one game to go against the Chargers in San Diego on Friday the 49ers 2009 training camp is coming to a close. A lot of questions have been answered, with some still left to figure out, here are some observations:

The most important position battle was at quarterback between Shaun Hill and Alex Smith. It was also the one competition Mike Singletary did not need to have. I think it was just to boost Smith’s confidence that he is not a NFL draft bust and still has a chance to be a great QB (which I don’t believe to be the case). Hill should have been the named the starter outright and Smith should have been told you want the starting job, go out and take it!

With last year’s starting cornerback Walt Harris out for the year, and possibly his career, the 49ers had to scramble to fill his position. They accomplished that with signing veteran Dre’ Bly who has shown in training camp he still has some gas left in the tank. The 49ers had CB Tarell Brown compete with Bly for the starting job but he has been bothered by a toe injury since the start of training camp. Bly has earned the starting job with his play but if he cannot hold up for the season and gives up too many big receptions expect Brown to be inserted as the starter.

The installation of the Michael Singletary run, run, run type of offense has so far been successful thanks to offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye. Frank Gore has seen limited rushing action so he can preserved for the regular season allowing rookie running backs Glen Coffee and Kory Sheets to led the rushing attack. Coffee is ranked 1st in the preseason in rushing yards with 230 and Sheets is ranked 6th with 144. Yes, it is only the preseason but with the 49ers offense most likely calling rushing plays 60% of the time it gives the coaching staff confidence in the rushing attack knowing that when Gore comes out they can still run Coffee and even Sheets if they need to and will get the same results.

The wide receiver position has been the biggest hole the 49ers have had to fill since the days of T.O. and the legendary Jerry Rice. The 49er Faithful thought we had filled that hole with the selection of Michael Crabtree but the contact holdout that followed has given us a sour taste in the mouth. I think Crabtree will sign with the Niners before the start of the season but the 49ers might not see a lot of him in the first few games as he learns the offense and gels with his teammates. Isaac Bruce and Josh Morgan will most likely be the starters and we have a deep bench with Brandon Jones, Arnaz Battle, Jason Hill and Dominique Zeigler but having Crabtree in the game will make the defense account for the passing game freeing up the rushing attack. The receivers listed does not exactly strike fear into the hearts of the opponents secondary.

The rushing attack continued to be non-existent in the preseason like it was all of last year. I was expecting Justin Smith to led the defensive lineman’s core of young players but if he is leading them it has not been with his play. Watching Tony Romo last week hold onto the football for 4-5 seconds on each pass attempt showed the 49ers biggest weakness on defense. DE Kentwan Balmer needs to set-up his pass rushing this year to show why the 49ers picked him in the first-round last year. The 49ers D will only go as far as their D-lineman will allow them to. No pass rush, big plays will be given up.

The biggest surprise for me during training camp and the preseason games has been the play of rookie quarterback Nate Davis. He played extremely well against the Cowboys last week and was the reason the 49ers kept intact their undefeated preseason record. Davis still has a long way to go as he has only learned about half the offense but he has been named the third-string QB for the season. Do we a diamond in the rough? We will see.

What has excited you most about training camp and the preseason? Answer in the comments.

Many 49er players were surprised but welcomed how grueling of a training camp Singletary installed. Most of the practices were in full pads which is not common among other team’s training camps. But when you have a coach who expects the best from his players every second on each play Camp Singletary will be success so long as the players don’t break down during the regular season.

The last time the 49ers had a winning record and won the NFC West was in 2002 and now seven years later after enduring Terry Donahue, Dennis Erickson, The Joke Family, aka the York’s, the loss of T.O. (probably a good thing, but he ran the almighty Jerry Rice out of town), Mike Nolan and his brilliant number one draft pick, should we have a sense of potential for the 49ers in 2009? Listening to Mike Singletary the team has it in them to be great if they give everything they got, here’s looking at you Vernon Davis, and if they play ever down like the game is on the line the 49ers will succeed. But with training camp less than two weeks away I wonder as a Niner fan, how should I be feeling about the upcoming season? Sure, the potential is there but we have heard that many times the last couple of years that this is the year the 49ers turn it around. When you look at it our first round pick is a wide receiver which have not had a lot of success in the NFL when drafted in the top ten, we have another new head coach with lots of potential which has been earned but we need a stable regime in place, and Singletary is stirring a quarterback controversy between incumbent Shaun Hill and potential bust draft pick Alex Smith. I don’t know what Smith has shown in OTA’s but I suspect Singletary is trying to put some fire under Hill to make him show he can be relied on as a permanent starter with some competition. Our defense continues to be the biggest question mark and with Walt Harris out for the year the cornerback position opposite Nate Clements is up in the air between Terrell Brown and Dre Bly. The 49ers only consistent coach has been defensive coordinator Greg Manusky. He has installed years of defensive schemes led by Patrick Willis so whatever question marks the secondary might have the rest of the D could develop into a force this year. The running game is cemented with Frank Gore and the return of fullback Moran Norris. With young and improving offense lineman Joe Staley and Chile Rachal leading the way Gore will give the defense hell as Crabtree, Bruce and the rest of the young and fast receiving corp. exploit defenses. Another question mark is how will our seventh offensive coordinator in seven years structure the offense? Jimmy Raye has had success as a coordinator and is known as a great running backs coach but can he develop an offense that will be a staple of not only the Red and Gold but of the NFL? I guess that’s not a fair question because I know we all long for the days of having a genius head coach in Bill Walsh and our team being known for the creation of the West Coast offense. I think 2009 might be different. I am not shooting for the stars but progress is the only thing we can make now, right? How you feelin’ Niner fans?

General Manager Scot McCloughan wasted no time bringing in a replacement cornerback for the injured Walt Harris who tore his right ACL on Tuesday. The 49ers signed 10-year veteran Dre’ Bly to be the possible starter at right cornerback. Bly, who is 32 years old, brings a lot of experience to the team. He spent the last two years playing opposite Champ Bailey with the Broncos. Before that was with the Loins from 2003-2006 and with the Rams where he played with Isaac Bruce from 1999-2002. Bly is a great signing because his experience and professionalism will help not only the young cornerbacks on the roster but the whole defense. Bly was released for the first time in his career in the off-season shortly after new head coach Josh McDaniels took over in Denver. There are a plethora of experienced corners still available so the 49ers had a wide selection of CB’s but it is good to note that former Niner head coach Mike Nolan is Denver’s new defensive coordinator. I am sure Nolan had something to do with Bly being released. I think that is the best thing Nolan has done for the 49ers in the last two years.

“I never been released. That was humbling to me,” Bly said. “The fact that happened, I’m so hungry. … At this point in my career, it’s not about money, it’s about the opportunity to come in and compete. I wanted the right opportunity to compete and play. San Fran is a great franchise, has won Super Bowls, it’s a great city. There’s a lot of upside.”

Bly has had an impressive career. He has played in 151 regular season games (111 in which he started), has not missed a game in the last three years, is a very fit 188 pounds which gives him more speed and durability and has been selected to two Pro Bowls. He has 40 career interceptions and three times in his career Bly has had six interceptions in a season which are career highs. Bly was told he will not be the starter outright and would have to compete with Tarell Brown and Shawntae Spencer. Bly is also versatile with his experience returning punts and kickoffs. Let’s hope what was McDaniels and Nolan’s discarded trash, will turn out to be the 49ers gold treasure.
