With reports swirling the San Francisco 49ers are one of the teams interested in trading for New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, a source within the 49ers organization said the chances are “.001 on a scale of 1 to 10.”

Heading into free agency the 49ers are $12 million under the salary cap and have a need at cornerback. So I don’t doubt general manager Trent Baalke has inquired about what it would take to trade for Revis. This is likely where the first reports of the 49ers being interested in Revis came from. The clarification by a member of the 49ers organization that the team has very little interest in Revis, is likely true.

The 49ers will have 15 draft picks when the NFL Draft starts on April 25. Conceivably, they could trade two or three of those draft picks and still have enough left over to fill their position needs. However, the Jets will likely seek a first and second round draft pick, a price too steep for the 49ers. Those early round draft picks will help fill holes for the Niners at wide receiver, defensive back and kicker with players who can contribute right away.

What is also stopping the 49ers from making a trade to get Revis in a Red and Gold uniform is the long-term contract implications. Revis is set to be a free agent after this season, so he will be looking for a deal worth long-term deal around $15 million to $17 million per year. Is that a deal the 49ers can afford long-term? While the scenery maybe nice, I doubt the 49ers will be willing to invest in new real estate like Revis Island.

As it currently stands, All-Pro CB Darrelle Revis is a New York Jet, however things may change come draft day as the San Francisco 49ers are loaded with 15 draft picks and are in desperate need of a shut-down corner. In adding fuel to the fire, Revis was interviewed by current Seattle Seahawks and former 49er Michael Robinson on the possibility of playing for the Super Bowl contender, saying:

You got to tip your hat off to them to what they did last this past year. This is a team with a great coach (Jim) Harbaugh and great players on their team. They did it without me last year. So for me, looking at their roster and their team, I would just be an addition to help them win that trophy. Would it be awesome? I mean, yeah.

However, it remains unclear on if the 49ers would take a chance on a star player coming off an ACL injury. Furthermore, adding Revis would not come cheap, as the Niners would likely have to give up a couple of high draft picks as compensation. In addition, Revis’ asking price would be in the ballpark of $13-$16 million range, which would put the Niners in a financial hardship.

So after all this, the question I ask is Revis worth it? Yes. The 49ers are built to win now, and by adding Revis for only one-year much like the 49ers did with Deion Sanders back in 1994, it would increase their chance of finally hoisting that lombardi trophy. Regardless of what Seahawks CB Richard Sherman says, Revis is by far the best corner in the game today, evident by Revis earning the nickname “Revis Island,” in which Revis is left alone on one side of the field. The same can not be said of Sherman.

In all likelihood, the trade will most likely come on draft day if a trade was to occur. As the selections unfold, the Jets can then predict if the 49ers hold a drafting position worth targeting. If they covet a prospect worth trading for, do not be surprised if the Jets pull the trigger.

By having Revis on the 49ers, the next question is, what number will he wear? 49ers running back Anthony Dixon already owns #24, so it will be interesting to see if Revis pays “Boobie Dixon” off or chooses another number. All of this is hypothetical of course, but we can all dream, right?

We will learn more on the Revis trade rumors as the NFL Free-Agency unfolds next week, and will keep you updated on the possibility of Revis coming to San Fran.

Just as San Francisco 49er fans were absorbing the news of Alex Smith being traded to the Kansas City Chiefs, it was followed by reports the Niners are among a “handful of teams” interested in trading for Darrelle Revis.

Revis is currently under contract with the New York Jets, but will be a free agent after the upcoming season, and team is looking to trade him. The 49ers are in desperate need of an upgrade at corner after the secondary was burned badly in the playoffs and Super Bowl. This, plus San Francisco’s potential 15 draft picks after trades and compensatory picks are handed out make them an ideal trading partner.

While there is no doubt Revis was one of the best cover corners before last season, there are risks trading for him. The biggest risk is Revis’ health. He suffered a season ending knee injury after he tore his ACL against the Miami Dolphins in Week 3 last season. And he could also be a one-year rental if the 49ers trade for him and cannot agree on a long-term deal.

If Revis is fully recovered from his ACL injury this would be a great trade for the Niners to make, even if the cornerback is only around for the 2013 season. The 49ers have about a two to three year window for them to return back to the Super Bowl with the core group of players currently on offense and defense. Bringing Revis in would help anchor down the secondary and address the problem of the defense giving up big passing plays.

Update: ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted a source said the 49ers are not going to pursue Revis. Intriguing…

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen said a source told him the 49ers are not inclined to pursue Darrelle Revis at this time. So there’s that.
