So Alex Smith once again looks poised to be the 49ers starting quarterback. Once again he is receiving rave reviews from his teammates. Vernon Davis said in an interview June 28th with Comcast SportsNet Bay Area:

“He’s more of a leader than he’s ever been at this point,” Davis said. “I’ve never seen Alex like this, ‘taking charge’ is what I call it. It’s Alex taking charge. He’s in the classroom walking us through everything, talking about all the plays. He’s taking all the snaps. And he’s really being a leader out there. That’s what Alex should’ve been doing. But it takes time for some guys to get to where you need to be.”

That many of the 49ers’ offensive players came to Smith’s workout sessions is a testament to Smith’s hard work and leadership.

“He’ll send out a mass text and tell us where he wants us, what time,” Davis said. “I’ve never seen Alex like this. He really cares about his career, and he knows he’s on his last straw, so he has to be exact and precise.”

Camp Alex has concluded after a week of practice at San Jose State University. Alex Smith said he would like to have another minicamp at the end of the month if the lockout continues. Chances are the lockout will not end anytime soon so I think the 49ers should to have as many practices together as they can. There were only a couple minor injuries so Camp Alex was a success. To have most of the offense together, 20 players, to run through plays will help the team when the lockout is lifted. Here is a recap of Camp Alex:

Alex Smith is organizing a minicamp for 49er offensive players and yes Michael Crabtree is there. All this may lead to Smith being the 49ers starting QB in 2011. I still think Jim Harbaugh is and always has been smarter than that. Alex Smith is organizing a camp with 49er players for one reason and one reason only: the lockout. The 49ers are stuck with Alex Smith and Alex Smith is stuck with the 49ers. Think about it, who else right now could “lead” the 49ers offensive players in workouts? As great as they are there is no way this would work with Vernon Davis or Frank Gore leading the workouts. You must have a veteran QB and Harbaugh of all people knows that.
