According to CSN Bay Area Sports, the San Francisco 49ers have negotiated a contract with T Anthony Davis, that contains what is called “de-escalators,” in his contract. The “de-escalators” is a philosophy that is sometimes used to motivate a player to perform up to his potential. In Davis’ case, his “de-escalators,” is tied to his weight, meaning Davis will need to maintain his current physique, year in and year out, in order to maximize his contract.

Jan 14, 2012; San Francisco, CA, USA; San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith (second from left) is congratulated by offensive tackle Anthony Davis (76), tight end Vernon Davis (85), and wide receiver Brett Swain (far right) after scoring a touchdown during the fourth quarter of the 2011 NFC divisional playoff game against the New Orleans Saints at Candlestick Park. The 49ers defeated the Saints 36-32. Mandatory Credit: Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

That should not be a problem with Davis, as he is a beast in the weight room year around. I know this first hand, because I see him at the gym pumping iron like no one’s business. Also, he gets his cardio in by playing basketball in the off-season with QB Colin Kaepernick, CB Chris Culliver, ILB NaVorro Bowman, ILB Patrick Willis, and sometimes WR Michael Crabtree.

One of the main reasons the 49ers added the “de-escalator” was to ensure Davis would not become content, now that he is financially set. Often times, you will see NFL players, especially lineman, come to training camp overweight or out of shape. Some prime examples include, DT Albert Haynesworth, OT Andre Smith, and OT Bryant McKinnie.

However, despite these “de-escalators,” I do not see it being a problem for Davis, as he is out to prove he is one of the best right tackles in the game.

When the San Francisco 49ers drafted T Anthony Davis with the 11th pick of the 2010 NFL Draft, no one was happier than me. He was a young talent on the rise, and had the athleticism and size to be a cornerstone of the offensive line for years to come. However, as with most things, Davis had a learning curve he needed to develop and has quickly evolved into one of the best right tackles in the game today.

According to Gregg Rosenthal of NFL Network, the 6’5″ 323 pound tackle agreed to a five-year, $37.295 million extension that will keep him in San Francisco through 2019 a source told Albert Breer. The deal according to Breer includes $17 million in guarantees. This could be a sign of things to come as the 49ers will need to lock up G Mike Iupati, WR Michael Crabtree, OLB Aldon Smith, and of course QB Colin Kaepernick.

Davis’ contract indicates that the 49ers had the option to re-sign departed free-agent FS Dashon Goldson, however they valued right tackle more and thus Davis was given a lucrative contract. Davis is an absolute mauler in the run game, and has improved dramatically in pass protection after being moved to the right side.

With a pay raise comes scrutiny, so Davis better live up to those lofty expectations, otherwise the Forever Faithful will be questioning the move. And if I had to take a guess, I believe he will.

On Thursday, San Francisco 49ers offensive Tackle Anthony Davis called Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs a “loser” on twitter. Showing some lingering Super Bowl bitterness he also tweeted this,

We went head to head in the Super Bowl. He made no plays.

— Bam Davis (@AnthonyDavis76) February 27, 2013

Davis was reacting to comments Suggs made while appearing on local Bay Area Sports Radio Station KNBR 680-AM to promote a movie he co-wrote. Suggs was asked to comment on teammate Cary Williams calling the 49ers any “fake guys” and “pretenders” after the Super Bowl. He was also asked if the Niners’ offensive line had fake tough guys, and he responded, “[T]hey’ve got one fake tough guy.” The interviewers as pushed Suggs for more details and he praised everybody on the Niners’ offensive line, except Davis.

This did not sit well with Davis who took offense to being called a fake tough guy. Davis also tweeted,

“Another case of a cornball wit money..he was a loser before he had the nfl backing him. You can tell by his moves. Thirsty for any hype. Lol,”
