The injury bug does not seem to be going away for the San Francisco 49ers receiving corps. Whether it’s an injury to a high-profile wide receiver like Michael Crabtree, or an injury to a receiver trying to make an NFL roster for the first-time like Brandon Carswell, the receiver corps cannot catch a break. Carswell was released by the Niners on Tuesday after he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his knee. It was reported he tore his knee last week at minicamp.

The Oakland Raiders signed Carswell as an undrafted free agent in 2012 after he attended USC. He had three receptions for 36 yards in four preseason games for the Raiders. However, he spent all of last season on their practice squad.

The heartbreaking part of this story is that Carswell signed a two-year deal with the 49ers the same day he suffered a torn ACL on June 12. In fact, the injury occurred a half hour into practice after he took the field for the first time for the Niners. He was a long shot to make the team, but if he did he was expected to be a reserve receiver and have a role on special teams.

Like Crabtree, Carswell also sustained his injury during a non-contact drill at practice. Carswell went to Milpitas High School in the Bay Area where he led them to the 2006 CIF Central Coast championship. In his senior season he had 11 interceptions as a cornerback, and as a quarterback ran for 1,503 yards and 19 touchdowns. He switched to wide receiver in college after he went to USC. Hopefully Carswell will be able to fully recover and restart his NFL career.

With the release of Carswell the 49ers now have an open roster spot. We can expect the spot to be filled quickly and with a wide receiver. Currently the 49ers have the following receivers signed with the team: Anquan Boldin, Crabtree, Chad Hall, Chuck Jacobs, A.J. Jenkins, Ricardo Lockette, Mario Manningham, Marlon Moore, Kassim Osgood, Quinton Patton and Kyle Williams.

It was announced on Monday the San Francisco 49ers reached a deal with technology company Yahoo! to be the exclusive online sports content provider at Levi’s Stadium. The deal is a 10-year agreement that will begin when the new Santa Clara stadium opens in 2014.

The 49ers are thrilled to partner with Yahoo!, a locally-based, global brand that shares our vision for Levi’s Stadium. Yahoo! is a tremendous example of Silicon Valley innovation at work. Their experience in servicing the fan and wealth of resources will serve integral roles as we strive to present an unparalleled experience to visitors of Levi’s Stadium.

49ers Chief Executive Officer Jed York

The 49ers new stadium will be set up to be the most advanced and hi-tech stadiums in the NFL. Fans will be able to personalize their experience at Niner games by accessing a wireless network provided by Yahoo! using a smartphone or tablet to watch the game recorded through the thousands of HD cameras installed. With so many cameras fans can pick any point of view they like, which puts them closer to the action. Niner fans will also be able to look up stats and information on players.

In addition, Yahoo! will have the branding rights to the Fantasy Football lounge and the two adjacent viewing platforms, or “fan zones,” that will be in the stadium’s suite tower. The tech company will also help with enhancing the in-stadium experience for fans by allowing them to upload photos and videos to Flickr and to access Yahoo! Fantasy Football at the new stadium.

This partnership will no doubt enhance the fan experience at Niner games, but was Yahoo! the best tech company to partner with? Yahoo! is in the midst of repositioning itself as an important tech company after years of falling behind other tech giants. A more logical, and not so outdated, tech company to partner with would be Silicon Valley icons Google or Apple. Who knows if they even were considered or submitted a bid for the rights at the stadium, but when I think of Yahoo! I don’t think innovated tech company anymore. When I hear Yahoo!, I think of AOL and dial-up.

The San Francisco Zoo invited 49ers guard Alex Boone to their facilities on Friday for an event to name a black rhino after him. The four-year-old rhino will be named “Boone.”

“There are very few black rhinos left on this planet, so to have one named after me is truly an honor.”

You’re probably wondering why of all the 49ers players would the zoo pick Boone for the honor. Well, other than Boone’s physique being similar to that of a rhino, he also runs the Alex Boone Animal Education Project. He created the project in 2012 after became involved with the San Francisco Zoo. It is set up to bring at-risk youth to the zoo.

Boone fed “Boone” during the event and the zoo unveiled a plaque commemorating the naming ceremony. Also in attendance at the zoo was the 49ers’ Gold Rush and Sourdough Sam.
