The competition between Colt McCoy and Scott Tolzien to be the backup quarterback behind starter Colin Kaepernick is heating up. After the 49ers third week of OTAs, McCoy is the leading candidate to the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart.

[Photo Gallery: 49ers Third Week Of OTAs]

Less than three months remain before the start of the regular season, which includes training camp, so the competition is far from over. McCoy is entering his fourth season in the league and his first with the Niners after an off-season trade. Tolzien has spent his two years in the NFL in San Francisco. McCoy holds an huge edge with 21 career starts, to Tolzien’s zero at quarterback. An advantage for Tolzien is he has spent the past two seasons learning Greg Roman’s offense as the teams third-string quarterback.

At OTAs Jim Harbaugh seemed to endorse McCoy as the backup to Kaepernick by saying:

(McCoy) has been in that role since he got here. He’s doing very well, picking up the system. And a guy that is really serious and focused on being good and doing a good job. He’s got a lot of things that motivate him to work hard. And he’s worked extra hard, too. He’s doing well.

Also in the mix battling for a position on the Niners QB depth chart is rookie B.J. Daniels. The seventh-round draft pick is competing to get on the roster as the third-string quarterback, which means Tolzien is essentially battling for two roster spots. The combination of McCoy’s experience over Tolzien and the 49ers trading a fifth- and seventh-round draft picks to acquire him, are other reasons why Colt will be the No. 2 QB.

New 49ers cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha has spent the offseason working on his conditioning and learning Vic Fangio’s defense. Asomugha signed a one-year contract with the Niners after spending last season with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The cornerback is looking to redeem himself after not living up his big contract he signed with the Eagles. One way Asomugha will be able to regain his old form is by mastering the Niners defense. The transition seems to be going well. When talking about Fangio’s defense after a practice at OTAs, Asomugha said,

The adjustment hasn’t been that hard. This is a really solid defense all the way around,. Since everybody knows the defense, it’s really easy to communicate.

Anything I don’t get I can ask anybody on the defense and they pretty much have it down. It’s different when everyone has the defense down and one guy needs the answers and everyone can help him out. It’s not like everyone is trying to learn something new.

Asomugha has a huge opportunity to win a starting job at cornerback and prove his detractors wrong that he is washed up. With his intelligence and history of being a shutdown corner, I would not be surprised if he wins Comeback Player of Year in 2013.

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Kyle Williams has spent the whole offseason rehabbing his knee injury he suffered last season. This week at Organized Team Activities Williams was running at full speed on the field, which is a positive development in his quest to rejoin the team.

In Week 12 last season, Williams suffered a season-ending knee injury. Even though he was at OTAs running full speed, he is only participating in individual drills and working on his route running. All while the Niners medical personnel are watching nearby. His rehab is progressing well, but he is eager to get back on the field at full strength.

I just have to listen to trainers. At this point I feel good, feel great, making progress every single day and we just want to stay on that same path and be ready for week one.

I want to be out there with my guys and help steer the young guys in the right way. I want to be out there with them…but we have to be smart. You can’t put the foot down on the gas if all the parts aren’t working right.

Williams has not been medically cleared to play, but he is expected to be return sometime during training camp. The 49ers will not only need Williams receiving skills with Michael Crabtree’s injury, but also his ability in the return game. The 49ers have an open spot at punt returner.
