It was reported on Tuesday San Francisco 49ers left guard Mike Iupati had surgery on his shoulder in the offseason. Iupati will miss some of San Francisco’s upcoming organized team activities. He is expected to be at 100% by the start of training camp.

With news of Iupati going under the knife, he joins outside linebacker Aldon Smith and defensive end Justin Smith as Niner starters who have had offseason surgery. The good news is all three players will be back to full strength by the start training camp at the end of July.

There is likely a correlation between the news yesterday of the 49ers signing former guard Adam Snyder and Iupati having surgery. Snyder’s signing was insurance not only for Iupati’s recent surgery, but also if any other offensive linemen gets injured from now until the end of the season. Last season, the 49ers were one of three teams who had all five offensive linemen start in all 16 games. San Francisco knows that accomplishment will likely not be repeated in 2013, which is where Snyder comes in.

The Niners will have Snyder compete with guards Daniel Kilgore and Joe Looney for the backup spots on the depth chart. All three could make the team, but the Niners roster will not have many open slots for backups on the O-line. The more likely scenario is the team having Snyder and Kilgore on the active roster, with Looney on the practice squad. The signing of Snyder is more significant with Iupati having surgery because he has started 83 games in his career. Kilgore and Looney have zero combined starts.

The San Francisco 49ers continue to receive good news about three players who finished last season on the injured reserve list. Defensive tackle Demarcus Dobbs will “probably” be all healed up from his partially torn ACL and PCL in time for the start of training camp.

Dobbs joins running back Kendall Hunter and wide receiver Kyle Williams of the players ahead of schedule in recovering from their season-ending injuries in 2012. All three are expected to be ready by the time training camp starts in late July. Dobbs suffered a partial tear of his ACL and PCL in Week 14 against the Miami Dolphins and he did not play the rest of the season. Dobbs’ agent, Wesley Spencer, said he is “well ahead of schedule”, but did not say when he would return to the field.

Though a defensive player, Dobbs only played on 44 snaps last season. His biggest contribution was on special teams for the 49ers. However, with defensive linemen Isaac Sopoaga and Ricky Jean Francois no longer in San Francisco, Dobbs will be expected to step up to provide much needed depth on the D-line. The 49ers signed free agent Glenn Dorsey to fill in for Sopoaga at nose tackle and Ray McDonald is expected to move up the depth chart to take over for Jean Francois as the starter.

No doubt, the Niners will use one of their many draft picks on a defensive lineman. But having Dobbs healthy and back on the field will provide not only depth as a backup, but depth with experience on the field. The only other backup defensive tackles now on the roster are Ian Williams, Will Tukuafu, Lamar Divens and Tony Jerod-Eddie. Divens and Jerod-Eddie were recently promoted from the practice squad to the active roster.

Almost four months after suffering a torn ACL and undergoing surgery, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Kyle Williams ran for the first time. Via his Twitter account, Williams said:

Ran today first time since surgery and felt great #speed

— Kyle Williams (@KyleWilliams_10) March 26, 2013

Williams suffered a torn ACL in his left knee in the win over the New Orleans Saints in Week 12 last season. He missed the rest of the season because of the injury. If you recall, Williams was hurt on the same play as running back Kendall Hunter who also missed the rest of the season, but with a left ankle injury. There have been no reports on the status of Hunter’s injury, although he is expected to make a full recovery.

Last season, Williams did not exactly have eye-popping numbers through 12 weeks of the 2012 season with only 14 catches for 212 yards and a touchdown. He did, however, have San Francisco’s longest pass play of the season with a 57-yard reception against the Chicago Bears in Week 11.

There is some caution with Williams tweeting he ran for the first time. In February, he said he would likely be back on the field by the start of training camp. This means no organized team activities for Williams in the spring.

There’s no reason to rush it. I’ll be able to run and do all sort of non-contact stuff way before. But we’re looking at training camp being ready to go and making sure we’re good to go for next season. There’s no point in being ready to go for OTAs or anything like that. I probably could, but there’s no point. We’re trying to get everything handled the right way.
