The San Francisco 49ers will have to trim their 90-man roster down to just 53 players before beginning the regular season. Which veterans may be out of a job?

The San Francisco 49ers recently drafted 11 bright-eyed rookies. Shortly after, they compiled a list of undrafted players to round out their 90-man offseason roster. In short, they’ve brought in nearly two dozen young and hungry players to compete.

49ers general manager Trent Baalke will have to release players and manipulate the roster to get to the 53-man cap by early September. Unfortunately, having to cut 37 players means that there is a high likelihood that some well-known names are looking for work elsewhere in just a few short months.

In some cases, players will be cut because they didn’t do enough to earn themselves a roster spot in 2016. In other cases, players are coming off injuries and, fair or not, a younger and healthier option rises up the depth chart. Lastly, new head coach Chip Kelly brings a particular system that may not fit every player.

Regardless of the why, it will be important to watch the who. As with many of the 49ers’ recent moves, each one is an indication of the direction of the team. The roster trimming is no different.

Nobody likes to predict someone’s unemployment but, in the busy NFL offseason, that’s the nature of the business. With that, let’s look at five veterans that may be on the roster bubble heading into the 2016 regular season.
