In Chinese philosophy, a ying-yang represents how the good and the bad complement rather than oppose each other.
Hot and cold, night and day, fire and ice, good and evil, these elements are all interconnected.
For the San Francisco 49ers, their ying-yang came full circle on Sunday when it was reported, that holdout Alex Boone, who missed voluntary mini-camp, mandatory mini-camp, training camp, and the entire preseason, will report to the 49ers on Monday after agreeing to a new two-year contract.
Then hours later, news broke around the NFL, that defensive lineman Ray McDonald had been arrested on domestic violence charges.
The arrest comes just days after the NFL announced a stiffer penalty for players charged in domestic violence, with a first offense carrying a six-game suspension and a second offense equaling a lifetime ban.
San Francisco gains a starter and might end up losing another for six games to suspension, this after losing Aldon Smith for nine games due to continued off the field run-ins with the law.
It almost seems like the 49ers can’t catch a brake this offseason.
The good news if any, is that San Francisco has depth, at both the defensive line. Guys like Tank Carradine and Quinton Dial could take over for McDonald if indeed he is suspended.
Time will tell as the NFL will begin its investigation, but in the meantime, the 49ers are one of the those teams who can’t wait for the season to start, where they hope the only distractions are on the field, and not off.
