The San Francisco 49ers are on the road for their final preseason game on Thursday night against the Houston Texans, before kicking off the regular season September 7 against Dallas.
The main idea for Thursday is to leave Houston healthy and with the idea of who will be a 49er after Saturday night.
The most intriguing position battles remaining include defensive line, linebacker and cornerback, where the 49ers have as many as 30 players currently on the roster at those spots but may only carry 22 of them. (Players placed on the reserve lists aren’t included since they don’t count against the roster, i.e. Navorro Bowman)
At defensive line:
From this group, the 49ers could carry as many as seven defensive lineman (10 currently on the roster), eight to nine linebackers (12 on the roster), and six cornerbacks (eight on the roster).
It makes Thursday’s game all the more important for players on the bubble, like Demarcus Dobbs, who could be fighting for a roster spot against Quinton Dial, who has been impressive this preseason, including having a 10-tackle performance against Denver.
And for quarterback Josh Johnson, who is in his second stint with the 49ers, this could be his last shot to impress the coaching staff into keeping three QBs on the roster.
The 49ers final preseason game kicks off at 8pm ET.
