The San Francisco 49ers are set to host the Denver Broncos in their second preseason matchup of the season.
The big question entering Sunday’s matchup will be, how much playing time will the starters see.
Under Jim Harbaugh, the 49ers have had a very specific game plan when it comes to the starters during preseason. The game plan usually follows like this:
1st preseason Game: 1st drive of game
2nd preseason Game: 1st quarter
3rd preseason game: 1st half
4th preseason game: 1st drive of game
With this in mind, it’s highly probable that the starting group will see the entire first quarter before giving way to the second and third stringers, most of whom are fighting for a roster spot.
One of those players, Joe Looney, was penciled in as a backup to guard Alex Boone, who is currently a contract holdout. Looney is fighting to secure a starting spot on the offensive line, and Sunday’s matchup could either be a huge step forward, or a huge step back.
