In the first game to ever be played at Levi’s Stadium, the San Francisco 49ers laid an absolute goose egg, as the Denver Broncos ran up and down the field all day long under the beautiful California sun.
The 49ers were blanked 34-0 and through two full preseason games, have scored a combined three points.
Colin Kaepernick and the starting offense played the entire first quarter, but were unable to score any points. A Kaepernick pass intended for Brandon Lloyd was just a few inches too far and a Phil Dawson 55-yard field goal attempt on the next play, went wide right.
Kaepernick finished 5 of 9 for 39 yards.
Blaine Gabbert played better than last week’s dreadful performance against Baltimore, and did lead a solid drive that once again, ended in a missed field goal by Dawson, this one a 44-yarder that hooked right.
Gabbert’s final play on Sunday was an interception that was followed by a 33-yard touchdown pass from Broncos QB Brock Osweil0er to rookie wide receiver Cody Latimore.
Josh Johnson entered the game and on the second play of his first drive, tripped under the center, fell on his back, got up, scrambled, then fumbled away the ball back to Denver.
The 49er defense was shredded all day long, whether it be Peyton Manning, Osweiler, or Zac Dysert, who combined for 30 completions on 38 pass attempts with one touchdown pass each.
San Francisco committed four turnovers, including one on three straight possessions.
The 49ers next game is on Sunday against the San Diego Chargers, a game in which the starters should play the entire first half.
