The San Francisco 49ers have had a pretty impressive run under head coach Jim Harbaugh, that includes three NFC Championship games and a Super Bowl appearance. Despite a pretty remarkable record, the 49ers haven’t been able to get over that hurdle and hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Harbaugh has earned the praise of another pretty successful head coach, John Madden.
“He’s doing a great job,” Madden said, via San Jose Mercury News. “He’s done one of the great coaching jobs ever, especially with that first year and the (labor) lockout and how he couldn’t work with the players and they went all the way to the (NFC) Championship.
“Great coaching job.”
Madden is familiar with coming close to winning the big game but falling short. Harbaugh has gone to three conference championship games in his first three seasons, the first coach to do so. Madden, similarly, went to the AFC Championship and lost in five of his first seven seasons.
Madden isn’t reaching out to give Harbaugh any advice though.
“Hell no,” Madden said. “He’s done a lot of good things and won a lot of big games. The last thing he needs is counseling on that.
“The answer is you don’t do anything. People get close and try to do something. They panic and screw everything up.”
