The San Francisco 49ers training camp has started off to a shaky start. 49ers officials have confirmed that running back Kendall Hunter tore his ACL on Friday in a non contact football drill.
Hunter buckled his knee and went down performing a juke move in practice. Initially it didn’t appear the injury was serious after Hunter had walked off the field but unfortunately the MRI confirmed the tear.
This injury couldn’t have came at a worse time for the 4th year back out of Oklahoma State as he enters a contract year for the Niners. He has been the primary backup for Frank Gore since his rookie year in 2011.
Luckily the running back depth is loaded this year and boasts a talented trio of Gore, rookie Carlos Hyde, and LaMichael James. James, who has primarily been a returner with the Niners may finally get his chance to rack up some carries because his speed/receiving skill set out of the backfield is on point with Hunter’s.
Marcus Lattimore is also vying for playing time this year but is currently on the PUP list while rehabbing his knee.
Hunter rushed for 358 yards and three touchdowns on 78 carries last season and 4.6-yards-per-carry.
