San Francisco 49ers’ General manager Trent Baalke shared his thoughts regarding Joe Staley’s new deal in a release on the team’s official website:
In today’s NFL, it is rare for a player to play his entire career with one team. With this extension, Joe will likely be a 49er for life. He is a three-time All-Pro and core member of our football team. His commitment and professionalism have been great assets to our team and our community. This extension reflects our philosophy of investing in our core players.
Since 2011, the 49ers have gone to the NFC Championship Game three consecutive times. Staley was a key player for every game during that span. He has the athleticism to get to the second level of a defense, and that is very important to the Niners’ powerful rushing attack.
Staley’s extension also proves to be beneficial for quarterback Colin Kaepernick, mainly because Staley is fantastic at protecting his quarterback’s blind side. Kaepernick is fresh off of signing a contract worth up to $126 million, keeping him healthy is imperative for the 49ers. He puts himself at risk since he often uses his speed to scramble around, so it’s important to have a capable left tackle as talented as Staley.
