The San Francisco 49ers have a new tight end coach in Eric Mangini, a coach with a primarily defensive background. That might make Mangini and odd choice for tight end coach, but it is that defensive background that might be helping the 49ers’ learn.
“With coach Mangini, it’s a lot different since he has a defensive background,” tight end Vance McDonald told 49ers.com. “We focus on the guy across from us, evaluating him. What’s he like in base? What’s he like in his stance? How is he in pass rush? How is he in the run game? How does he fit?”
McDonald added: “[Mangini] has so much knowledge on the defensive side of the ball, you kind of see our system differently and how you fit in instead of looking solely on the offense. It’s been an awesome offseason with him.”
Mangini did serve as a head coach for two different NFL teams and once upon a time served as an offensive assistant. The tight end situation is one to follow in training camp with Vernon Davis reportedly planning to hold out for a new contract. Davis has been back and forth on this contract situation from holding out to it not being a big deal, so it will be interesting to see how long that stand off goes and how long it lasts.
