The San Francisco 49ers pick Chris Borland. The 49ers have now made two of their four picks in the third round. They traded down quite a bit earlier Friday, but seem to be happy with who they have picked up. They seem to have snagged players at the top of their draft board, regardless of position. What else can explain the fact that the 49ers picked up a replacement for Frank Gore in Carlos Hyde after seemingly having selected Gore’s replacement last year in Marcus Lattimore, who is returning from a seeming redshirt season. It would be a big surprise if Gore returns next season.
This was an excellent pick for San Francisco. He will be in a great position to back up all players in the linebacking corps and spelling each and every player. He will also be able to hold down the fort for Navarro Bowman. Also, his special teams value should be incredible.
Does this really fulfill a need for San Francisco? Well, kind of, but not a glaring one. Once again, the 49ers pick up the player on the top of their board, not the guy who can fill the biggest need.
