The San Francisco 49ers selected a defensive back at the bottom of the first round. Now it is time to look ahead to rounds 2 and 3. Here is the 49ers Day 2 Draft Primer.
The 49ers had (and have) the most picks in the top 100: 6. They have so far used one. That means the 49ers, as of now, have five picks to use tomorrow evening. It will be a busy night and one that should definitely get 49ers fans excited. The selections are, in round 2: 56 and 61. In round 3 the 49ers have picks 77, 94, and 100.
The 49ers desperately need to pick up a wide receiver at some point. Another defensive back would be nice as well, along with an outside linebacker and some depth on the defensive and offensive lines. The big one, though, is wide receiver.
The player that the 49ers need to figure out a way to get in the third round is Martavis Bryant out of Clemson. Overshadowed by the admittedly incredibly Sammy Watkins, Bryant quietly had a monster season. His incredible physical gifts–6’4”, 4.42 40-yard dash–just add to his innate ability for catching the ball in the red zone–something Colin Kaepernick definitely needs his receivers to be able to do. True, Bryant is raw, but the 49ers will be able to develop him. That is part of the beauty of having Anquan Boldin around.
Expect the 49ers to get involved in the trading action in the next round or two. The 49ers may have to trade up in the second to get Bryant or another receiver that they may covet. Pick number 100 cannot be traded, as it is a compensatory pick, but all others may. Do not be surprised to see some picks leave for the 49ers to move on up.
The 49ers have a golden opportunity to improve this squad. Tomorrow night will go a long way in determining that.
