David Fales: Smokescreen or real possiblity for 49ers

Unless San Francisco is able to extend the contract of Colin Kaepernick, the 49ers might be in search for a new starting quarterback come the 2015 season.

Currently on the QB depth chart are Kaepernick, Blaine Gabbert, who was acquired in a trade with Jacksonville, and McLeod Bethel-Thompson.

Both Kaepernick and Gabbert will become free agents following the 2014 season while Bethel-Thompson seems poised to duke it out for the third QB spot on the team, which could end up being San Jose’s David Fales.

Fales, who coach Jim Harbaugh considers to be one of the top-5 QBs in the 2014 draft class, impressed the former NFL QB at a workout in April.

I’m a big fan- Jim Harbaugh

San Francisco General Manager Trent Baalke, who attended a game between San Jose State and Fresno State back in November, also spoke very highly of Fales, saying “he’s very accurate…there’s a lot to like about him“.

In that game, Fales set a school record with 547 yards passing and six touchdowns as San Jose knocked off the 16th ranked Fresno State Bulldogs.

It’s no secret that Harbaugh is a big fan of Fales, but is it just your typical NFL Draft smokescreen, or is Harbaugh genuinely interested in drafting the San Jose State QB, who many football experts place among the top 10 QBs in the upcoming NFL draft.

San Francisco is drafting a QB, you can bank on it. Will it be Fales? We might not find out until Day 3 of the Draft but right now, that seems to be the buzz going around the Bay Area.

Harbaugh knows how to mold QBs, he proved that with Andrew Luck, Alex Smith, and Kaepernick. David Fales could very well be his next project.

They probably won’t draft a QB till at least #100 . They say Fales will still be around at #170, I don’t think so.

It is nice that they are thinking about one for , but I think they have more important positions to fill. Harbaugh has expressed interest in about 10 QB’s, this is all about taking the best QB available whenever they do plan on drafting one.

I hope they do draft him at #100

They are taking a QB that’s for sure, but who and where?

I’ve heard Logan Thomas’ name thrown around quite a bit too

  • Alan Bagshaw

Actually, MBT is poised to duke it out for the number two spot.

You don’t think Gabbert has that job?

I personally think Gabbert needs to prove he’s #2 and is not guaranteed the position. 49er’s talk about position competition and I’ve followed MBT thru college and the pro’s so I think BG is going to have to work for the #2 slot. 49ers like MBT enough to bring him back and keep him. He’s still getting better and has not hit a ceiling. He’s works hard, he’s smart, talented and has a strong arm plus he’s had 2+ years in the NFL to hone his talents. He was the last QB standing in the 2011 49er camp and signed briefly to the 49er practice squad before Tolzien was released by the Charges. MBT then beat out other QB’s thought to be a lock with the Sabercats, Mountain Lions and Vikings. He beat out Sage Rosenfels who the Vikings signed to be their backup in 2012. Last preseason, MBT had the best preseason rating of the three Vikings QB’s with 89. He played as much as Cassle if not a bit more. A lot of Vikings fans were upset that MBT was cut for Josh Freeman. Add in whoever the 49ers bring in as the 4th QB and maybe 5th QB, and this preseason should be a great for the fans to watch. Most folks know nothing about MBT and will be surprised when they see him play.

Good post, 49ers are drafting a QB, that’s almost a guarantee.

Realistically, after Kap, it could be a crap shoot for the 2nd and 3rd backup spots
