Unless San Francisco is able to extend the contract of Colin Kaepernick, the 49ers might be in search for a new starting quarterback come the 2015 season.
Currently on the QB depth chart are Kaepernick, Blaine Gabbert, who was acquired in a trade with Jacksonville, and McLeod Bethel-Thompson.
Both Kaepernick and Gabbert will become free agents following the 2014 season while Bethel-Thompson seems poised to duke it out for the third QB spot on the team, which could end up being San Jose’s David Fales.
Fales, who coach Jim Harbaugh considers to be one of the top-5 QBs in the 2014 draft class, impressed the former NFL QB at a workout in April.
I’m a big fan- Jim Harbaugh
San Francisco General Manager Trent Baalke, who attended a game between San Jose State and Fresno State back in November, also spoke very highly of Fales, saying “he’s very accurate…there’s a lot to like about him“.
In that game, Fales set a school record with 547 yards passing and six touchdowns as San Jose knocked off the 16th ranked Fresno State Bulldogs.
It’s no secret that Harbaugh is a big fan of Fales, but is it just your typical NFL Draft smokescreen, or is Harbaugh genuinely interested in drafting the San Jose State QB, who many football experts place among the top 10 QBs in the upcoming NFL draft.
San Francisco is drafting a QB, you can bank on it. Will it be Fales? We might not find out until Day 3 of the Draft but right now, that seems to be the buzz going around the Bay Area.
Harbaugh knows how to mold QBs, he proved that with Andrew Luck, Alex Smith, and Kaepernick. David Fales could very well be his next project.
