The San Francisco 49ers‘ recent trend of legal troubles continues as Aldon Smith was arrested Sunday after indicating that he was in possession of a bomb while in LAX international airport. This comes less than a week after news broke about Colin Kaepernick being listed as a “suspect” in a “suspicious incident” in Miami. Trent Baalke responded to the Smith episode with a statement similar to what you would expect:
“We are disappointed to learn of the incident today involving Aldon Smith. As this is a pending legal matter and we are still gathering the pertinent facts, we will have no further comment.” -Trent Baalke
Apparently Smith became upset and belligerent after being selected for random screening and indicated he had a bomb. While no other facts about the situation have become clear, it appears to me that Smith was frustrated that he had to deal with the nuisance of a random screening and made an extremely stupid decision–saying he had a bomb. This is not something one should say, even if there is no bomb–which, was, in fact, the case. Smith was booked for violation of California Penal Code 148.1(a) – False report of a bomb threat, according to NFL.com. it certainly cannot help his pending drunk driving case, or his status with the NFL.
The 49ers may be looking for a new pass-rusher this draft, after all. It looks fairly obvious that Smith will have some work to do before he gets that lucrative extension that seemed all but assured a short while ago.
