San Francisco 49ers‘ cornerback Chris Culliver has been arrested for “felony hit-and-run, reckless driving causing an injury, felony possession of brass knuckles and misdemeanor hit and run for the striking the vehicle,” according to SI.com. Apparently Culliver hit a bicyclist and fled the scene, threatening an eyewitness with brass knuckles and denting the eyewitness’ car while leaving. The brass knuckles, which are illegal as well, were found in his car during a police search.
The 49ers, of course, released the expected statement in response to this incident through KTVU.
The 49ers organization is aware of the recent matter involving Chris Culliver. We will remain in contact with Chris and the local authorities as we continue to gather the facts regarding this situation. As this is an ongoing legal matter, we will reserve further comment at this time.
This is a troubling situation for the 49ers. Culliver has previously been criticized for anti-gay comments, though he has recently made many statements in support of the homosexual community. Unlike that incident, however, this one led to a physical injury and involves law enforcement. The 49ers definitely have experience with players having run-ins with the law (see: Aldon Smith) but cornerback is a position of desperate need for the 49ers. If Culliver continues to be a problem, the 49ers just need to address this position that much more. One thing is clear: the 49ers must look for a potential number 2 corner in this year’s draft to play across from Tramaine Brock or, at the least, in the number 3 spot.
Hopefully Culliver can turn this around.
