ESPN.com’s NFL Nation reporters shed a little more light on the now-faded Jim Harbaugh trade saga. Apparently John Harbaugh was asked recently about Jim’s trade rumors, and this was his response:
I laughed. First, I was ticked off because he hadn’t told me about this. I’m his brother. I’m supposed to know. I called him, and he just laughed about it.
At this point, laughing might be the best thing to do. Sure, Jim and the front office sometimes butt heads, but that is what competitive people do. After Anquan Boldin‘s laughing, Jim and John’s laughing, and the appearance of strong and cohesive work between Jim and Trent Baalke this offseason, there seems to be little left to keep the story alive.
There is one thing, however: a contract. Jim still does not have an extension–though he did, as he stated he wished, get an extension for at least one of his assistants, giving Vic Fangio a raise. Harbaugh may not desire more money–though his agent probably does–he may not need fancier pants, either. A bigger, longer contract would, however, keep the fan base and media slightly at bay when the ever-turning rumor mill comes around again. Is the story dead? Not quite, but it sure does not seem to have much going for it.
