Steve Smith was released by the Carolina Panthers not too long ago and the rumors are already buzzing around the NFL as to him signing with the Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots, and San Francisco 49ers. Should the 49ers get in to a bidding war for the aging star? Should they sign him at all?
The 49ers already have one aging receiver on their team, Anquan Boldin, and though Smith may be a decent one-year addition, it would be hard to imagine him getting much playing time. The 49ers need to develop younger talent. Quinton Patton will need to see the field some if the 49ers want to evaluate him or get him to improve. The 49ers will also likely pick up a receiver in the draft. If Smith is brought into the fold, someone will be left without many snaps. Perhaps if the 49ers get an incredible deal on the former Panther, he would be a nice locker room addition and mentor. However, they already have both in Boldin and spending money on someone who will either keep a young player from developing or not see the field is probably not worth the cost. Perhaps if he were a few years younger or a bit better at this point in his career–or if the 49ers did not get Boldin back–it would be worth it. As it stands now, however, the potential Hall-of-Famer would seemingly not be a good addition to this 49ers squad.
