Everyone of Aldon Smith’s 12 sacks during the 2013 season meant more than just a loss of yards for opposing teams- it also meant that a child could attend summer camp, but not just any old summer camp.
Camp Kesem is college-student run summer camp program for kids whose parents have had or currently have cancer.
For the 2013 NFL season, 49er linebacker Aldon Smith joined Washington Redskins lineman Tyler Polumbus and Buffalo Bills rookie quarterback E.J. Manuel in “Scoring for Good”, the fundraising program that sought to send those kids to Camp Kesem for one week while bonding with fellow students who have also shared a similar experience.
Niner Noise was fortunate enough to have Aldon Smith answer a couple of questions regarding his involvement his campaign for “Scoring for Good”. Below are his responses.
NN: Why Camp Kesem?
AS: Camp Kesem gives kids who are scared and alone as a result of their parent’s cancer diagnosis the confidence and support needed to manage a very frightening time. I want to give these kids a chance to leave these adult-sized problems behind and just be a kid at camp.
NN: Did you have anyone close to you that was diagnosed with cancer?
AS: I have a friend who was diagnosed with breast cancer. Luckily, she beat it.
NN: What did it mean to you to know that a sack not only helps out your team, but also sends a kid to summer camp?
AS: It’s a double bonus that something that helps my team, also helps a fan who needs a little extra support.
NN: How many kids to you plan to send to camp next season?
AS: As many as possible! I’m gearing up for a record breaking year!
I would like to thank Jonathan Gluskin of SS | PR in helping set up this unique opportunity to inform not only the general public, but the 49ers Faithful as to Aldon Smith’s special campaign during the season.

Lastly, I would like to thank Mr. Aldon Smith himself for taking some time out of his offseason to answer a couple of questions regarding his involvement in the “Scoring for Good” campaign with Camp Kesem.
Here’s hoping that Aldon racks up as many QB sacks as possible next season in helping both his team, and those kids affected get away for just a little while.
