Colin Kaepernick appeared on ESPN’s SportsCenter on Sunday and he was asked about the possibility of having a gay teammate. Kaepernick responded by saying Michael Sam, who recently came out as gay, would be welcomed in the locker room if he was drafted by the 49ers.

I think when he steps into that locker room everyone’s going to know that he’s there to help us win games. That’s why you’re in the NFL — to help us win games. No one cares if you’re black, white, straight, gay, Christian, Jewish, whatever it may be. When you step on that field, you’re a member of, in my case, the 49ers. Or the Carolina Panthers. That’s your job. That’s your occupation.

It’s no surprise to hear from Kap that a gay teammate would be welcomed in the 49ers locker room. Their locker room is known as having an atmosphere where everybody treats each other with respect.

Kaepernick was interviewed alongside Panthers QB Cam Newton. Both co-hosted the Hall of Game awards show that airs at 7 p.m. tonight on Cartoon Network. The show was taped on Saturday. Click here to see a video of Kaepernick’s interview.
