San Francisco 49ers‘ linebacker Navarro Bowman needed to wait 2-3 weeks for his MCL to heal enough so that he could undergo ACL repair surgery. After about 2 weeks, this has finally occurred. Navarro Bowman posted a photo of himself on Instagram. In it, he is in the hospital with the caption “Time for surgery.” As reported by ESPN, Dr. James Andrews, the Washington Redskins‘team physician and by far the most famous orthopedic surgeon in professional sports, is performing the operation down in Florida.
Recovery from a torn ACL has drastically sped up in recent years. An injury that used to all but end a players’ career now has a return timeline of 6-8 months for professional athletes with the most advanced recovery regimens. This is the class Navarro Bowman is in. Perhaps the NFL’s best linebacker–and maybe, even, the NFL’s best defender–should be able to return from this if anyone can. His pal on the inside of the 49er’s linebacking corps, also arguably the NFL’s best linebacker/defender Patrick Willis, will sure be happy to have his mate back by the beginning of the NFL regular season, 7 months away. If Bowman has anything to say about it, he will be.
We will keep close tabs on Bowman’s recovery. For now, getting the surgery done is a good start.
