San Francisco 49ers backup guard Daniel Kilgore was arrested on public intoxication charges in his hometown of Kingsport, TN last weekend.
First reported by Nick Shephard of the Kingsport-Times News Kilgore, 26, was arrested in the early morning hours of Jan. 26th along with his friend, Brandon T. Thompson, 25.
According to the police report both men were staggering around the streets around 2 a.m. when Kingston officer Greg Lane stopped to speak with them. Lane claims that both men smelled heavily of alcohol and had dilated pupils and red eyes. After taking their ID’s they were both arrested “for the safe and welfare of the public.”
Kilgore, a native of Kingsport, went to Appalachian State and was a 5th round pick in the 2011 draft by the 49ers. He has yet to make a start in his first 3 years with the team but has seen action in a rotational role. With pending free agent center Jonathan Goodwin near retirement the Niners could look at Kilgore as a future option at that position.
This incident shouldn’t be a cause for concern given the magnitude of the arrest. Kilgore did the right thing by not driving intoxicated but he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
It has been well documented that the NFL has had a problem with drinking and driving, as 49ers fans know all to well (Aldon Smith) and if anything players should take note of Kilgore’s willingness to avoid the wheel in such situations.
