Stanford announced on Monday they hired San Francisco 49ers defensive assistant and outside linebackers coach Peter Hansen. Hansen will serve as the inside linebackers coach under head coach David Shaw.

After Jim Harbaugh was installed as the 49ers head coach in 2011, he brought Hansen over from Stanford to be an assistant on his staff. Hansen was a defensive assistant in 2009 and 2010 under current Niners defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. In the 2008 season, Hansen was the strength and conditioning intern for Stanford.

Hansen is returning home as he is from Palo Alto. He got his start in coaching thanks to his high school alma mater. From 2004-2007, he was the assistant coach and defensive coordinator at Palo Alto High School. He attended college at the University of Arizona, where he played both football and basketball. He played professional football for the Cannes Iron Mask in Cannes, France, in 2003, and later played professional basketball for Club Falcon in Copenhagen, Denmark, during the 2003-2004 season.
