Some of the San Francisco 49ers selected to play in the Pro Bowl on Sunday, including linebacker Patrick Willis, declined to take part in the All-Star game. Most fans chalked up the players’ absence to the NFC Championship loss. For Willis, his reason for sitting out was because of recent surgery to his left thumb.
In the preseason, Willis broke a bone in his right hand, but he did not miss any regular season games because of the injury. The only time he missed this season was because of an injury to his groin. He had not appeared on the injury reports at all this season for thumb aliments and he was listed as healthy leading up to the NFC Championship game. It is not clear if he injured the thumb in the game. There is no timetable for his return, but he is not expected to miss any of the offseason workouts for the 49ers.
