The San Francisco 49ers have three quality head coaching candidates on their staff in Vic Fangio, Greg Roman, and Jim Tomsula. Just a few days ago it seemed likely that Roman would end up a head coach of the Washington Redskins or the Penn State Nittany Lions. Suddenly, however, it now appears unlikely that he, or any 49ers assistant, will land a head coaching gig this offseason.
The Redskins announced Thursday that they have hired Jay Gruden, former offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals, while Penn State has reportedly offered their job to Vanderbilt coach James Franklin. Roman, who interviewed for the Penn State job a couple of years ago as well, once again seems to be on the outside looking in, with the Minnesota Vikings supposedly his last chance at a head coaching job.
As for Fangio and Tomsula, despite reported interest, nothing seems to have materialized. It does not appear any coach will be hired, let alone have an interview. Perhaps something will come up in the near future, but it seems like another round of “wait ’til next year” for the Jim Harbaugh coaching tree.
Though these men cannot move on to bigger and better things for themselves, we 49er fans could easily consider today a day to rejoice. Though some other assistants have moved on, the big coordinators look likely to stay and continue their run of significant success. All good things must come to an end, but apparently this does not have to yet.
