You can file this under absurd: WWE legend Ric Flair has received death threats all because of his surprise appearance he made at the San Francisco 49ers’ hotel last Saturday. Flair was at the hotel to get the 49ers fired up for their wild-card game against the Green Bay Packers.
Of course, the only reason the 49ers won was because of this speech…according to Flair:
49ers win! WOOOOO! Congrats SF! Obviously my pep talk worked! WOOOOO! #OldSchoolRaw
— Ric Flair® (@RicFlairNatrBoy) January 6, 2014
Ever since the video went viral (see it in full below), Flair has received flak and even death threats from fans. It’s not clear if the threats were from jaded Packers fans or Panthers fans who are anticipating a loss to the 49ers.
In case you don’t know, Flair is a resident of North Carolina. Apparently this was too much for some people to handle and a betrayal that, according to his publicists Facebook page, has led to death threats which will cause him to not attend Sunday’s playoff game:
A long time Carolina Panthers fan, RicFlair created quite the stir when WWE sent him to Green Bay, WI January 5th to give the San Francisco 49ers an unexpected locker room pep talk. WWE is hosting WrestleMania XXXI in San Francisco in 2015. Now many are asking: Will Flair attend the January 12th playoff game in Carolina as they host San Francisco? And if so, which team will he support?
“When the 49ers reached out and WWE asked Ric to jet up there, of course he said yes,” says Melinda Morris Zanoni, Flair’s agent at Legacy Talent and Entertainment, “and he’s friends with a bunch of the 49ers just like he is with the Panthers, Packers, and many other NFL players. But no, Ric does not intend on attending the Panthers vs. 49ers game this weekend.” “What can I say? I’ve always been a very good heel!” added Flair.
The 49er pep talk, which instantly went viral, caused many Carolina fans to voice their feelings of anger and betrayal on social media – some even offering death threats to Flair. “We know fans are passionate about their teams, but some of the choice language we have been receiving is scaring off our interns,” says Melinda.
Adding fuel to the fire, Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith said the following about Flair’s pep talk for the Niners:
As a guy who actually has a Ric Flair robe I’m real disappointed in seeing that. Real disappointed. I’m not sure if he’ll (Flair) get the invite here. That Golden Gate Bridge has been burned.
NFL fans are some of the most passionate supporters of their teams in all of sports. But this is going too far. The 49ers should make Flair an honorary captain for a future home game because of the death threats.
(Side note: Flair was my second favorite wrestler growing up, right after Razor Ramon. So when you mess with “the stylin’, profilin’, limousine riding, jet flying, kiss-stealing, wheelin’ n’ dealin’ son of a gun” that is Ric Flair, who mess with all of his fans…woooo!)
