CBS Sports recently announced that San Francisco 49ers’ Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman was to soon interview for the Penn State Head Coaching position. Adam Schefter, however, announced today that Roman had already interviewed for it. . .Sunday.
Now, the 49ers’ OC will obviously have his focus on a Super Bowl victory. That would only enhance his resume, whether or not he gets the job for the Nittany Lions. This need not be a worry for 49er fans. Rather, what 49er fans should worry about is the future impact losing Roman would have on Jim Harbaugh‘s team. Don’t get me wrong, Harbaugh is a great offensive mind and I am sure the creative scheming will continue, but Roman has proven himself a great coach.
Sadly, this means it would be selfish of us fans to want him to shy away from the chance of a lifetime — being a head coach. On the other hand, replacing him will be quite difficult. It is never easy replacing a key part of championship runs. Hopfully, with Colin Kaepernick having been able to grow for a while under Roman, new face could bring more out of the highly talented young signal caller.
Will Roman leave? Who knows? But with NFL teams calling his way, and with Penn State taking a serious look at him, and with his desire to be a “lifer” coach at Penn State — and Nittany Lions’ fans’ desire to have another Joe Paterno-esque man who is there for the long hall — I expect Roman to finally get his shot at the big time.
