Eight San Francisco 49ers hope to miss their opportunity to play in this coming year’s Pro Bowl. Frank Gore, Joe Staley, Mike Iupati, Vernon Davis, Ahmad Brooks, Navorro Bowman, and Patrick Willis were all selected for the first “unconferenced” Pro-Bowl — which means they could end up facing off against each other. Imagine Willis guarding and tackling Gore. I, for one, do not think that will help the level of play improve. If players tried to avoid injuries in the previous format, how could having players from the same team line up against each other improve that?
Hopefully, however, the 49ers will once again avoid a trip to Hawaii. Last season, of course, the 49ers selected for the Pro Bowl happened to earn a trip to the Super Bowl instead. This year, with players regaining health (for the most part) and the 49ers looking as strong as they have all season, Super Bowl hopes seem legitimate.
I do not know of many people who would normally choose a trip to New Jersey over Hawaii in February, but when it comes to something as big as the Super Bowl, the weather can be overlooked. Sure, Florida, Texas, California, Arizona, or any place with a dome would be much nicer for the players on the field — as well as the fans that show up — but these eight players, as well as the entire 49ers team, will be more than willing to do whatever it takes to hoist the Lombardi Trophy that they came so close to earning last season. No matter the conditions, who has it better than them?
