The San Francisco 49ers were forced to release their No. 3 quarterback, McCleod Bethel-Thompson, after receiver Michael Crabtree was activated to the roster. With only two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster for Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Rams, it is not clear who the emergency quarterback is for the offense.
A lot of NFL teams only go with two quarterbacks each week, but this is the first time Jim Harbaugh will enter a game with just two quarterbacks: Colin Kaepernick and Colt McCoy. When coach Harbaugh was asked about the third emergency option he replied only like he would, saying,
That’s a good question. We’ll let you know if we’re in that position.
Rarely are teams presented with situation of having to use a third-string or emergency quarterback in a game. Anquan Boldin played quarterback in high school, so that could be an option. But let’s hope the 49ers are never faced with this dilemma. Because by that point the Niners would’ve lost two quarterbacks and definitely the game no matter who is put under center. I wouldn’t be surprised if Harbaugh found a way onto the field somehow in that situation.
