Power Ranking By The Number Week 12

The San Francisco 49ers missed a great opportunity to establish themselves as a playoff team. For looking like the better team for the majority of the game, the entire team fell apart  at the end of the game. It all started with the personal foul that negated the sack fumble that would have given the 49ers the ball with the lead with 3 minutes to go. Was that a penalty, in my mind no, but even still the penalty allowed for the first field goal that tied the game. While fanatics will scream otherwise, that wasn’t what lost the game.

The game was lost by the offense not able to pick up a single first down when they had the chance to go win the game or at least run out the clock. Colin Kaepernick not going down in bounds followed by the 15 yard penalty for hitting the punt returner is some of the worst football we have seen in the Harbaugh era. We can all point to the penalty on Brooks and say that’s what lost us the game, but in reality the game was lost by mental lapses that occurred after that play.

We knew going into New Orleans to play the Saints would be a difficult game, and it proved to be. That now drops the 49ers to 1-4 against teams in the top 10. The good news, the 49ers only have one game remaining against teams in the top 14 and that is a home game against the Seahawks.

The 49ers fall to their lowest rank (tied for 9th) of the season while also falling to 6-4 in the standings. Next up is a trip to Washington to face the 3-7 Redskins. At some point the 49ers offense has to get back on track. In their 6 wins the Niners have put up at least 30 or more points, in the 4 losses they have scored a combined 39 points. They’ll have that opportunity playing Washington who is 28th in team defense while allowing just over 31 points a game.

The biggest mover of the week was Arizona moving up 6 spots to #15. The 6-4 Cardinals are playing good football having won 3 in a row and are starting to put pressure on the 49ers for the final wildcard spot. Ultimately the 49ers should still take the 6th seed, but the playoffs are no guarantee for a team that has gone to the last to NFC Championship games.
